It’s (Not) Beginning to Feel a Lot Like Christmas

Christmas is just over a week away. Although I know that by looking at the calendar and at the ever-growing pile of presents I’ve wrapped and placed beneath the tree, I can’t help but feel that this year is lacking the Christmas-sy mood. Even though I just dropped these in the mail today…

And even though we have a beautiful tree, and I’ve mailed the presents to out-of-towners, and I’m preparing my Christmas menu, etc, etc- the Christmas vibe still isn’t quite here. I think it’s because outside looks like this:

See what is missing? Yep, NO SNOW. Now, as much as I don’t like commuting in the stuff, I’m a born and bred Chicagoan who knows how to handle some serious winter powder. So I’m more than a bit depressed that I haven’t seen a single snowflake this year. I heard we got some around Chicago, but I never saw it. Instead, it is warm, grey and cruddy. Yes, I’m complaining that it is warm. Remind me of that when I’m bitching because it’s too cold in February.

I think the bigger problem is that this is the second year in a row where we haven’t had a “real” winter. And for someone who has experienced a fair share of white Christmases, snow signifies the holiday season.

I’m hoping that as this week progresses, the holiday mood will take over. Between my work Christmas party, a pretty heavy baking schedule, final present wrapping, and family parties to attend, I think I’ll be out of my holiday funk soon. Fingers crossed.

What about you guys? Are you feeling the holiday vibe? Can you believe we’re just over a week away? Do you have snow? If so, I’m coming over to play 🙂

  1. I was feeling all Christmassy, but it seems to have disappeared for the moment – I´m blaming small children and lack of sleep :o) We had snow, but most of it´s gone now as we have had warmer weather come in and the rain has washed it away – it´s quite weird when only a couple of weeks ago the youngest chap was getting stuck because the snow was up to his knees. I seem to have a mammoth amount of tidying to do (where did all that stuff come from) and then I can settle down to wrapping the rest of the presents ready for Santa to deliver when the boys are firmly asleep on Christmas Eve – just thinking about it is making me start to feel more Christmassy. Time to stick on the Christmas tunes and rock out!!! :o)

  2. I love it! You're making me feel more Christmassy already! I'm sure I'll feel it even more when I'm home wrapping presents and writing out menus and shopping lists. It's a bit hard to feel the Christmas spirit when I'm stuck at work!

  3. I can remember having only 1 white Christmas (unless you count the time a couple of years ago it showed the day after) and that was an event. We very rarely get snow before Christmas, and being along the coast, we very rarely get a really good snow at all. I don't see it in our future for this year either. I did hear, however, that the Midwest might be getting a Christmas snowstorm, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

  4. Christmas will officially start on Saturday afternoon with the arrival of our son Philip from UK, he's here until New Years Day. We put up the tree and decorations yesterday.

Got some presents to wrap too….

  5. Oh wow, I didn't even think about the lack of snow living on the coast!

And yep, we have some snow expected Thursday, with a bigger snowstorm next week- I've got my fingers crossed. White Christmases are just so magical 🙂

  6. How wonderful that you all get so much time together! I just finished wrapping presents last night, until another batch comes in the mail, at least!
